This classic design strongly resembles the design of U.S. Seated Liberty coinage of the 19th Century. It was used continuously by France from 1879 to 1846 for their Cochin China and Indo-China colonial issues, for the 10 Centimes, 20 Centimes, 50 Centimes and Piastre denominations.
The coins were created by France for use in commerce in her Southeast Asian colonies in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century. This commercial purpose is underscored by the inclusion in the reverse legend of the coin’s weight (27 grams) and silver fineness (0.900).
